Librarians
We aim to increase active library membership for the children enrolled in the Letterbox Club.
Joining a library can be a child’s first act of citizenship, opening up access to a wide range of fiction and non fiction books and resources, including ICT, to support them through life.
Many of the local authorities participating in Letterbox have used their local libraries as a venue for Letterbox activities and promoted membership to the child’s local library.
We invite participating local authorities to add into the parcel information about the child’s local library and details of any summer schemes, half-term events, homework clubs etc.
Book recommendations from librarians
Surrey librarian Chris Duke has used and recommends Joseph Rosenbloom's World's Toughest Tongue Twisters.
It's sometimes difficult to choose a book to engage a group of children of different ages and interests. This book is a good icebreaker, providing lots of fun with words coupled with amusing illustrations.
Karen Green from Leicestershire recommends Badger’s Parting Gifts by Susan Varley.
This book is a lovely sensitive story and helps children come to terms with bereavement.
Karen also recommends Long Way Home by Michael Morpurgo.
I have used this book many times with young people from about the age of nine. It is particularly useful for a youngster who has been to more than one foster placement.
Michael Morpurgo says of the Letterbox Club:
A great notion and I am glad to be a part of it.
