Letterbox Club is not just about books. Children receive colour maths games in each parcel and a selection of relevant equipment to go with them.
The games were devised and created by Rose Griffiths, Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Leicester's School of Education, as part of her Rapid Maths books. She is also the founder of Letterbox Club. They are reproduced for the Letterbox Club by permission of Rose and Pearson Education.
Each child receives games which are suited to their attainment level. Children are tested before and after they receive the parcels to ascertain the correct level and to gauge what improvement has been made. The games for Letterbox Blue and Red are collated so that the child will receive either Level 1/2 games or, if they are at a higher level, Level 3/4 games.
The emphasis is on fun learning. The games don't take too long to play and can be shared with carers or siblings. Children receive coins, pretend money and coloured counters to help them play the games.
The games for Letterbox Yellow, the parcel for children with additional educational needs, working below Curriculum Level 1, focus on counting up to ten. Letterbox Green, for secondary school children aged 11-13, contains games with a 'starter' and 'expert' level, again to suit the child's attainment level.
