  • Northern Ireland Evaluation Report

The Northern Ireland Evaluation Report was published in October 2010, which highlighted the improvements in reading and number of the children involved in the Letterbox Club.

The programme also helped to boost the self-confidence of many of these children.

Northern Ireland Government Social Services Minister, Michael McGimpsey, is keen for looked-after children to have the same opportunities as other children. He said:

The main purpose of the Letterbox pilot project was to trial a new way of improving the educational outlook for children, by providing children in care in primaries four and six with educational materials. Improving outcomes for young people in care is extremely important. Developing their education will not only give them the opportunity to gain the skills and qualifications they need but will also give them the confidence to strive further.

Kate Lewis, director of Fostering Network Northern Ireland, has been impressed by the impact of the programme:

The Letterbox Club has been such a success because it has involved these children more in their education, encouraging them to become motivated and enjoy learning. It has also given foster carers the chance to work more closely with the children in their care and help them to thrive. 'We hope the initiative will continue so that many more children can be given the opportunity to achieve their potential.
