An evaluation of the project's work, 2007-2009.

This report summarises some of the main findings for the first three years of the Letterbox Club. This covers the period where the scheme expanded from the 2007 pilot, which involved 22 UK local authorities and 560 children, through to 2009 when it became available to all UK local authorities and involved over 4000 children.

The key benefits of taking part in the Letterbox Club were:

  • Increased involvement of children in their own learning
  • Gains in reading and number for many children
  • Enjoyment for the child in receiving a series of personalised parcels
  • Increased involvement of carers

'The Letterbox Club is such a simple idea, but right from the beginning five years ago, when we just worked with twenty children in Leicester, it was obvious that it had a very positive impact on how children felt about themselves.

'The pilot in 2007 and 2008 has given us the chance to see the improvements it can make to children’s reading and maths, and we are very hopeful that even more children can benefit in future years.'
